  / Permapyrenees
DESCRIPTION:PANELTALK: MOUNTAINS THAT CHANGE
 Eñaut Izagirre Estibaritz\,
Jerónimo López Martínez y Marc Oliva Franganillo
 Retreating glaciers
\, degrading permafrost and crumbling ice faces are just some of the ways
in which the landscape is changing. After the screening of the short film
‘Permapyrenees’\, Jerónimo López and Marc Oliva will discuss with E
ñaut Izagirre how the mountains are changing\, the role of the cryosphere
\, and the risks this entails.JERÓNIMO LÓPEZ MARTÍNEZHe is a mountainee
r\, a Doctor of Geological Sciences and Professor Emeritus at the Autonomo
us University of Madrid. A pioneer of Spanish mountaineering\, he led the
first Spanish ascent of Manaslu in 1975. Between 2012 and 2016\, he chaire
d the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR)\, and he has parti
cipated in numerous forums on climate change. He brings a unique perspecti
ve to the conversation\, having witnessed first-hand the changing face of
the mountains and their dynamic processes.MARC OLIVA FRANGANILLOProfessor
of Geography at the University of Barcelona and the director of the ANTALP
research group. His research specializes in geomorphology\, climatology a
nd environmental change in cold regions\, focusing on the evolution of gla
ciers\, permafrost\, and mountain landscapes in the context of climate cha
nge. He has participated in numerous scientific expeditions to the Arctic
and Antarctica. As director of the ‘Permapyrenees’ project\, he provid
es a unique perspective on the degradation of hidden ice and its consequen
ces for the mountains and their visitors.EÑAUT IZAGIRRE ESTIBARITZHe is a
  geographer\, glaciologist\, and\, above all\, a mountain enthusiast. He h
as spent over a decade researching and exploring glaciers in the Pyrenees\
, Patagonia\, and Tierra del Fuego. His doctoral thesis examined the evolu
tion of the glaciers and glacial lakes of the Darwin Range. He has led exp
editions such as 'Incognita Patagonia' (2016) and 'Into the Ice' (2022)\,
which have been documented in award-winning films that have premiered at t
he Mendi Film Festival. He has been collaborating with the festival since
 2010. In this discussion\, he acts as a moderator\, facilitating a convers
ation between the perspectives of mountaineering and science.

On the highest peaks of the Pyrenees\, beneath the rocks\, glaciers\
, and the paths we walk along\, there is an almost invisible element that
shapes the future of the mountains. Permafrost. 'Permapyrenees' follows a
cross-border scientific team from Catalonia\, France\, and Andorra on a hi
gh-altitude research expedition to understand how climate change is transf
orming the frozen subsoil of the Pyrenees: Besiberri\, the Pessons cirque\
 , Vignemale\, Pica d’Estats and Maladeta.
