n 1962\, a French expedition led by Lionel Terray and made up of some of t
he finest Alpine guides achieved the first ascent of Jannu (7\,710 m)\, on
e of the most demanding and spectacular climbing routes in the entire Hima
laya. Images of the climbers straddling a razor-sharp ridge high above imm
ense voids captivated the mountaineering world and quickly became iconic.
Inspired by the beauty and audacity of those images\, a group of friends c
 omprising Iñaki Aldaya\, Xabier Garaioa\, Mari Abrego\, Josema Casimiro\,
Javier Muro and Patxi Senosiain set out from Kathmandu in the spring of 1
981\, bound for Jannu\, also known as Kumbhakarna.
