Asgeir Helgestad & Ageliki Lefkaditou: "Stories of a Changing World" Conversation moderated by Aner Etxebarria How can we capture a constantly changing natural world on film and tell the stories of those who inhabit it? They will be joined in conversation by Basque filmmaker Aner Etxebarria, director of ‘Bayandalai’ and ‘Abata’, whose work also explores the relationships between people, animals and their environment. Three perspectives come together to discuss nature, cinema and the stories worth telling.

MENDI TALK

Jennifer Peedom: "From Sherpa to Tenzing" In conversation with Billy Choi Screened at major international film festivals, including Toronto, ‘Tenzing’ is Jennifer Peedom’s first narrative feature, produced by See-Saw Films and starring Genden Phuntsok, Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe. The director of ‘Sherpa’ and ‘Mountain’ has consistently focused on the stories of those who have received less attention in accounts of great mountaineering achievements. In this conversation, she will explore how this perspective connects ‘Sherpa’ and ‘Tenzing’, as well as the new challenges and creative possibilities she encountered in moving from documentary filmmaking to a large-scale feature production. The conversation will be moderated by Billy Choi, Mendi Pro and Mendi Talk Coordinator.

In 1962, a French expedition led by Lionel Terray and made up of some of the finest Alpine guides achieved the first ascent of Jannu (7,710 m), one of the most demanding and spectacular climbing routes in the entire Himalaya. Images of the climbers straddling a razor-sharp ridge high above immense voids captivated the mountaineering world and quickly became iconic. Inspired by the beauty and audacity of those images, a group of friends comprising Iñaki Aldaya, Xabier Garaioa, Mari Abrego, Josema Casimiro, Javier Muro and Patxi Senosiain set out from Kathmandu in the spring of 1981, bound for Jannu, also known as Kumbhakarna.

LOS ÚLTIMOS GUARDIANES DE SHANGRI-LA

China, 25 min

Director: Marina Garcia Andreu

INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE

In a remote village in Yunnan, on the border with Tibet, an elderly man and his family live as guardians of the mountain. The documentary explores a way of life where the spiritual and the earthly coexist in a delicate balance. In the intimacy of their everyday gestures, a profound sensitivity towards nature emerges – nature understood not as a resource, but as an inseparable part of existence itself. It is a world that still endures, but whose future remains uncertain as generational differences begin to come to the fore.

EMBERS

Director: Trixie Pacis

EUSKADI PREMIERE

On July 24, 2024, a wildfire tore through Jasper, Alberta, reducing aerialist Sasha Galitzki's home to ashes. Embers connects Sasha's loss in the wildfire and the glacial recession she has witnessed in her creative work to highlight their common cause: climate change.

LA CHÈVRE D'HISPAR

France, 43 min

Director: Hugo Clouzeau

NATIONAL PREMIERE

A portrait of Piolet d'Or mountaineer Hélias Millerioux, told in fragments. His alpinism goes beyond the high peaks — he finds just as much meaning in the quiet drift of base camp life. Camcorder rolling, Hélias narrates the world he passes through with warmth and honesty: resolute in spirit, open in direction.

MENDITALK: PEDRO UDAONDO, PURO ALPINISMO

Isidoro Rodríguez Cubillas

The book retraces half a century in the life of one of the most iconic Spanish mountaineers in the history of the sport. Beginning with his earliest climbs in the Picos de Europa, where he played a leading role in landmark first ascents and route openings, the book follows his footprint across the Pyrenees and the Alps, the setting for some of the most demanding achievements ever accomplished by Spanish alpinists of his generation.
Author Isidoro Rodríguez Cubillas, who was also a close friend of Udaondo, goes far beyond a simple sporting chronicle. The narrative is enriched by the voices of those who shared both rope and life with him: family members, friends, and climbing partners who still regard him as a source of enthusiasm, inspiration, and unwavering passion for the mountains.
With special attention to Picu Urriellu and the early days of climbing in the Basque Country, the book also offers a journey back to an era of limited resources and uncompromising ethics, when the style and elegance of an ascent mattered just as much as reaching the summit.

Jennifer Peedom

The International Alliance for Mountain Film is awarding the 2026 Grand Prize to Jennifer Peedom, an Australian writer, director, and producer who creates films combining documentary realism with cinematic grandeur. An extremely personal style that, over the years, has made her one of the most authoritative voices in contemporary documentary cinema, particularly in the fields of nature and mountaineering.
Jennifer Peedom's journey began long ago and at high altitude and the first films that made her stand out were in 2008, ‘Miracle on Everest’ and above all ‘Solo’, winner of many prestigious awards.
The turning point came in 2015 with ‘Sherpa’, which was internationally acclaimed and nominated for a BAFTA award.
Two years later, in 2017, she made ‘Mountain’ in collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. The film surpassed ‘Sherpa’ and became the most viewed documentary of all time in Australia and was released in cinemas in 26 countries worldwide. The film was awarded with the Special Jury Mention at the Mendi Film Festival in 2017 and closed the Savage Cinema section of the San Sebastian Film Festival.
She is currently presenting ‘Tenzing,’ a feature-length fiction film about Tenzing Norgay and the first ascent of Everest.
After the IAMF Grand Prize awarded in 2022 to Michel Dillon, this new recognition testifies to the vitality and importance of Australian filmmakers on the mountain cinema scene.

TENZING

United Kingdom , Australia , United States, 128 min

Director: Jennifer Peedom

Based on true events, Tenzing chronicles the little-known story of Tenzing Norgay, a gifted Himalayan climber who, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, was the first to summit Mount Everest. Where Western climbers see Everest as something to be conquered, Tenzing reveres Chomolungma as the sacred mother goddess. What follows is an ascent defined as much by the tensions between social backgrounds, classes, and competing ambitions as by the perils of the mountain itself. But high above the world, empire, rank, and aspiration fall away, leaving two outsiders bound by mutual respect and trust.
